O my tears, flowing at her dwelling's traces,

You have made my story plain to the reproachers.

After you, who will keep my secret, when

You have revealed my secrets about my beloveds?

I hid it from you until it appeared,

Against my passion and my will.

    Tears are telltales, especially

When the lovesick lover stands in the dwelling.

    Her abodes remind me, whenever

I see them, of my bygone desires.

My eye and heart are charged, now that

They have departed, with weeping and remembrance.

May the dwellings of the tribe from Ramah be watered

By the clouds of that night-traveling cloudbank.

Spring encampments—since their graceful women went far away,

I have returned to my sorrows and thoughts.

From them I reaped the fruits of desire,

While time was guileless, not treacherous.

And today, when I addressed her ruins,

I found nothing in them but stones.

Time and its days drive me

    To my consolations and excuses.

I keep vigil when, over Laʿlaʿ, there flashes

Lightning, appearing like a blazing firebrand,

In a thick, dark, steadily pouring raincloud,

Lavish with rain upon the hills of al-Khalsaʾ.

Through the raindrops it bestows, they have become again

    Rich in flowers and blossoms.

As though it were my tears upon dwelling-traces

In which the tribe has left fragrant vestiges.

Their soil breathes rich perfume, just as

A perfumer's musk pod gives off its scent.

Dwellings where, with their inhabitants, I was

    Among turtledoves and moons.

In days when the moringas' shade spread wide, and the full

    Moon of the curtained chamber was perfect and radiant;

And the great trees were wet with drops of dew

    In a lush, fragrant garden.

The stream cuts through its reaches

Like a snake among nabʿ trees and laurels.

And the gray doves voice their lament above it

    Among trees and streams.

Their cooing's repeated cadences spare you the need,

Among the moringas, for a lute and flute.

Their birdsong intoxicates me before dawn,

As though it were a wine-seller's wine.

In a time whose every moment

Was like May in sweetness and beauty.

An age—if I desired any other, I would have

Sought an age unworthy of choice.

Until, when their pale camels, for departure,

Were fastened with girth-straps and saddles,

And they roused them to rush onward with their riders

    Between uplands and lowlands,

And the camel-driver repeated his rajaz chants

In a trackless waste seething with mirage,

Their full-grown camels went swaying in their nose-rings,

Like waves of a swelling, deep, surging sea.

Upon them were specters of longing, who had become

My partisans and allies in love.

Each youth upon his sturdy she-camel's back—

Nothing was seen of them but tattered garments.

Still lingering were the pleasures of passion and youth

And waywardness, giving no sign of abating.

And life's sweetness departed when they went far away

    With a bewitching-eyed enchanter.

In my love and his turning away, I have become

Caught between one who forbids and one who commands.

How is it then, O heart, soon after parting,

That you have not let go of longing and persistence?

    Does every lover likewise, when

He parts, become unable to endure?

Or is this the nature of a heart that holds

A wind of longing, bearing a whirlwind,

That blew upon its fragments, till the heart was left

In fire from its agonizing sting?

And what heart has any hope of healing,

    Shattered into fragments by longing?
