I see her seeking to turn away from al-Jiz‘,

though she once longed to reach it.

And that is only because Suad

has resolved to depart from its hills.

I obeyed folly in my love for her,

out of passion for her, and disobeyed the reproacher.

It is sorrow enough that I did not find

a way to bid her farewell the day she left.

What harm would it do the driver of the swift she-camels

to turn the pale camels toward me a little?

Perhaps I might steal a glance at her,

from close by, to heal an ailing heart,

and see between the howdahs’ curtains

    a kohl-dark eye and a smooth cheek.

But alas, on the day of parting I found

no compassionate friend who cared for a friend,

to cool my burning thirst by halting the mounts,

that I might see her and have my thirst quenched.

When I find no messenger to go to her,

I send the breeze to her as my envoy,

to tell her that, since she left,

I melt with longing and waste away to nothing.

And I never thought that separation

would seem dreadful to me, even if I died of it.

My sickness is proof enough for her, if

she wishes for proof of love from me.

And in my overwhelming anguish on the morning of departure,

I question an effaced and desolate campsite.

And I lament her still-standing traces,

in anguish for her, and weep over the ruins.

And I pour tears down upon them,

which carve a channel across my cheeks.

Were it not for love and the pain of separation,

I would have been sparing of my tears for them.

And no ring-necked dove upon a moringa tree,

passing the night in sorrow, calling out her coos,

kept sleepless upon it by his absence

when he is long hidden from her eyes,

where I once knew my loved ones to abide.

And one of shapely, swaying stature,

who lends the slender spears his own slenderness,

tires of my love, while a burning grief within me

compels me to love the fickle one.

He has gone far; had the distance of exile not

flung him away, I would have forsaken travel.

He journeyed by night, and my longing for his land

urges me to fasten the loads.

that makes the sword seem notched on both its edges?

And, O my she-camel, how long shall we stay?

Surely it is time to demand a brisk trot of you.

of pleasant rest here, and the tether?

and crossed the darkness and its terrors

whenever the noble camels donned its cloak?

I see glory upon the backs of she-camels,

when others are abased upon them.

The coward fears the creaking of the saddle-frames,

and mistakes their creaking for the clang of steel.

Trot swiftly with me to Hajir,

for there the women in howdahs have halted for the night,

even if the craven feels fear when

a deep-voiced steed sounds its hoarse neigh,

and beholds the lions among their horsemen,

who have made a thicket from al-Khatt’s spears.

There, with my resolve, I confront the jealous guardian,

and his fierce spearmen and the troop.

And whoever’s soul is not free

will graze in humiliation’s baneful pasture.
