بعدَ الخليطِ وعبرةٌ تتحدَّرُ
The trysting-place has grown distant: a sigh and remembrance,
After the tomb, there is sadness and remembrance
After the companions' departure, and a tear rolling down.
After the mixture and a tear drops down

ألِفٌ يخاطبُها وهنَّ الأسطرُ
And a bewildered lover among the ruins, as though he were
And a lover between the hills as if
An alif addressing them, while they are lines of script.
He is conversing with them while they listen

And ardent longing within the ribs: whenever
And a youth among the bosoms whenever
Parting is mentioned, its fire flares up.
Separation is mentioned, his fire rages

فيبيتُ يُنجِدُ وجدُه ويُغَوِّرُ
God help my heart—how relentlessly love besets it,
My heart, how much passion dwells within
So its longing roams by night through highlands and lowlands.
He spends the night moaning and his fervor intensifies

It hopes for union, and at times fears separation;
He hopes for union but sometimes fears estrangement
How long must it hope and fear in passion?
So he hopes in love but remains cautious

O heart, how often you yearn for the sanctuary's days
O heart how much you yearn for the days of ardour
And its dear people, with longing; how often you remember!
And its tents, yearning while remembering

They departed, and your heart, in sorrow, ever since
They left so your heart was left broken
They departed, breaks apart in their wake.
After they left, following their traces while breaking

كُفُّوا فميعادُ السُّلوِّ المحشرُ
A heart that tells those who reproach it for love,
A heart that says to those who blame it for passion
“Desist! The time for forgetting is the Day of Resurrection.”
Enough, the time of gatherings is the Day of Resurrection

هيفاءُ مُخْطَفَةٌ وظبيٌ أحورُ
A demure beauty with wide, dark eyes enchants you,
The doe-eyed darling rebukes you
Slender and slim-waisted—and a dark-eyed gazelle.
She is delicate, pretty, a graceful gazelle

ترنو بيقفلها وهذا جؤْ ذَرُ
As though this one were an oryx beside an arak tree,
As if she is a free-roaming oryx
Gazing [unclear wording], and this one an oryx calf.
Glancing while the other is a mountain gazelle

بيضُ القواضبُ والمشيجُ الأسمرُ
A gazelle whose union I seek, but between us stand
A graceful gazelle, I seek union with it while
White, cleaving swords and the dark composite bow.
The white hands, and the brown lips are forbidden

Where there is no lightning flash nor its clouds
But cleaving swords and murky battle-dust.

The horses race, the spearheads leveled,
And the horses neigh and the swords are drawn
White blades are notched, and lances bend.
And the white blades are stained and the spears pierce

The edges of keen swords—not lightning—flash
So my sword gazelles, not the lightning gives light
Where their champions' clouds are rising dust.
Where their cloudy manes are scattered

Raining nothing but arrowheads upon its champions.
With nothing but the swords, its darkness does not rain

In martial ardor they inhaled the spears' sweet herbs,
They tore through the fragrant breeze of spears eagerly
As though pungent musk were within them.
As if musk is embedded in them

Each a battlefield horseman who approaches death
With every horseman of battle who defends his people
As a familiar friend; praise delights him and revives him.
And is delighted by praise so he spreads it

شوقاً تظلَّمَ منه مَرْتٌ أزورُ
And noble she-camels I charged to reach the sanctuary,
And the women who yearned for them to the battle
With longing of which a crooked, barren wilderness complained.
A longing that blackened from it a bright complexion

There I wore out the swift she-camels; if they prove true,
I gathered them, so if we meet
Those lean thoroughbreds will assure our reunion.
Our long-awaited reunion will be fulfilling

Hoping for the return of the days of al-Liwa
Hoping for the return of the days of passion
And Muhajjir—may al-Liwa and Muhajjir be watered!
And a preserved and preserved enclosure

Neither those who journeyed from al-Aqiq toward the sanctuary
Neither those who deviate from passion to the battle
Have returned, nor does my tormented heart endure.
Returned, nor can my weary heart be patient

It made yearning for the loved ones its habit,
It has made a habit of yearning for the loved ones
And its unbridled longing never slackens.
So it became restless and its fervor does not wane

The reproachers censured my passion, yet unrestrained
Do not blame me for my passion so if they wronged me
Was my longing, though they wronged me and heaped on blame.
And increased their blame

It's all the same to me after passion
And passion has assailed me, whether their blame is long or short.
Befell me whether they lengthened or shortened

Bewildered: tears confessed, while I denied.
Perplexed, tears confess but I deny

Parting stripped modesty of its veil,
Separation removed the mask of shyness
And I began to fear nothing and hide no more.
So I began to fear nothing and cease concealing

In a stance with nothing but souls
That had melted, and were called falling tears.
That melted, so they called it falling tears

Neither can the blamer rein in my passion and force it back
By force; a longing like mine cannot be subdued.
Nor can the like of my fervor be coerced

Never! And my old passion is not with regret
For the one for whose love I am reproached and rebuked.

Never! And the flowers of union and its nectar
Far from it!—grow murky after its clarity.
Are too pure after its clarity to be muddied

Have come to speak of him and proclaim his love.

His breathing now betrays all that
And his breath has come to subtly signify everything
He hides of love's secret, and lays it bare.
He hides of the secret of passion and reveals

The cloud of his tears poured down upon them, yet they
The cloud of his tears poured on them but
Paid no heed, though the rain-bearing clouds withheld their rain.
They did not care while the rain-giving clouds were stingy

The swaying boughs of graceful figures captivate him,
The branches of the curled-up hair tempt him
And the red roses of cheeks stir his yearning.
And the redness of the cheeks inflames him

Your excess, my patience wanes, my yearning is still abundant.
You have exhausted my patience and yearning abounds

Soaring desire grows, and ribs blaze with love;
An ambition that increases and ribs that burn with love
Longing grows stronger, while patience is vanquished.
And fervor that strengthens and patience that collapses

How many nights I spent frightened in the long night
While one who has forgotten sleeps through it, and I lie awake.
While the friend of seclusion sleeps but I stay up

A time when my passion and youth can be excused
In it, one overcome by passion is excused.
And the overwhelmed by passion is pardoned

If the ambergris of the night of youth lasted

Loving brides among odes—whenever they go wandering,
The best of poems did not wander astray
Their traveling companion becomes perfumed by them.
And the composer became fragrant because of them

Speech becomes disturbed like the plentiful seas

For whose words no dowry is paid but souls.
