Its tears and their pouring have harmed my eye,

over a ruined campsite whose answer eludes me.

I address it after its companions have gone; yet what

good is addressing it, now that the company has departed?

A little solace for a lovesick man whose burning thirst is increased

by love's blaze and its flaring after separation.

Whenever a sigh from yearning's blaze oppresses him,

his riding camels make ready, heading for al-Mazimayn.

Noble she-camels that have not feared the desert's vastness,

nor been deceived, after a thirsty spell, by its mirage.

He asks: Has the company returned to the protected pastures?

His wandering abroad has lasted long in persistent quest of Layla.

And if a flash shines from the direction of al-Ghawr,

he weeps over it with tears whose cloud never runs dry.

His weeping lingers over the dwellings' worn remains,

and his sobbing rises over the deserted dwelling sites.

The weeping of a yearning man whose companion has left him,

just as his youth had left him before.

Ah, would I knew: will his time return,

as it startled my heart when its raven took flight?

Alas, now it has gone, there is no hope of its return.

And who could restore it to me, even if its return could be hoped for?

If the one you love turns away without a cause,

and reproaching him no longer does any good,

and he goes beyond bitter injustice, while both have come

to grow uglier—his rejection and his avoidance—

then, after abandonment, it is all the same to me, once

he turns away in aversion, whether he is far or near.

Our beloved ones, be gentle with a lovesick man: you have undone

the bonds of his pledge unjustly, and his dejection has grown.

And his fortitude fails him whenever

its hills appear from the heights of al-Abraqayn.

He yearns for whoever settled in its surroundings,

and loves the one its domed tents have come to shelter.

And the gazelle of al-Aqiq robs him of his sleeplessness,

and his sweet saliva intoxicates him without wine.

And the passing breeze delights him when it travels by night

to him with a fragrance his garments have imparted.

And the dream-phantom reminds him of his visit,

when his letter takes the place of sweet union.

And if lightning appears from the land of al-Yamama,

and its upright stance lingers upon the cloud's back,

and it flashes like a polished sword, unsheathed,

and its scabbard leaves it after a struggle,

I water the dwelling's barren ground with my tears; then

its dust turns to praise the clouds of my eyelids.

And its ruins grow cramped with streaming tears,

and its open spaces choke with manifest tears.

And I tell it: Pay no heed to a miser

with rain, whose low clouds do not pour upon you.

For in these eyelids is a sea: if they falter—

the clouds' pregnant she-camels—over you, its billows surge.

And among these poems is potent verse,

whose pursuit is hard for the masters of poetry,

    ويكفيهِ مِن دونِ القريضِ انتسابُهُ

    like my verse, now traced to the Arabs of old;

its lineage alone suffices it, apart from poetry.

There wafts, when I recite it in gatherings

of people, between east and west, its perfume.

And if it eludes the sound thoughts of some people,

its lineage comes to be traced to my sound thought.

And hearing it produces in the sound mind

an intoxicating effect its wine has never achieved.

Whenever I take up the parchment and the pen whose

saliva travels with these far-ranging verses,

then what finely strung verse do I not make blush,

and what learned man in this age do I fear?
