فأعْذَبُfor the sweetest الحبِّlove ماthat which غالبتَهُyou struggle against it وسَطاand it overpowers you
Do not settle for middling passion among lovers;
for the sweetest love is that which you resist and which overpowers you.
وجدٌpassion تركتُI left عِتاقَthe noblest of النُّجبِthe riding-camels لاغبهًexhausted

A passion! I left the noblest riding-camels exhausted,
for its sake, crossing lowlands and wooded hollows.

The companions went far; but for parting, never would
gray hair have visited my head, nor streaked it but for estrangement.

I long for their home, when that home held us together,
in the days when I rejoiced in the sweetness of union.

May the gushing rain of my eyes water the dwellings,
quenching the thirst of homes, dear friends, and companions.

They were here, then departed, as though time opposed me
over them, or had erred in bringing us together.

Yonder is their home, my she-camel; stride swiftly
like a male ostrich; may your strides never shorten in the wastes.

She complained of sore feet; but for an old friendship,
I would have let her tread upon the camel-drivers' necks.

Since their departure, I have kept holding fast to patience;
indeed, the wise man has become bound to patience.

I have lost my sleep since they went far away; no wonder
if my sleep stays far away or treats me unjustly.

It is the fair women who stir up sorrows when
they trail their robes across the meadow's face.

They drove me love-mad, so I poured out tears in anguish;
and how often tears have stripped away love's veil and covering!

So I am not one whom time's partings embitter;
for the noble have never thought resentment good.
