I addressed the ruins and dwelling-traces after you left.

And that is the state of one whom separation has cheated.

I sought my heart after you left; with you away, long grew

the span of separation, so I sought my heart and sleep.

Our beloveds, if you have seen someone who died of grief

after parting, mourning his beloveds—then it is I.

You gave me in exchange, as your riding-camels set out,

on parting day, grief in place of the day of meeting.

Has my old passion for you turned pagan,

so that it worshipped an idol among your idols?

You set up among yourselves, for the victim slain by passion,

idols of beauty that became temptations in your midst.

And whenever your pale camels were roused for departure,

surges of longing rose—longing that seldom grew still.

And my tears broke loose as those pale camels journeyed

away from the dwellings—tears long kept in store.

    لم يبقَ للدمعِ مِن بعدِ النوى ثمنا

    I squandered my tears over dwelling-traces after you departed;

no value remained for tears after separation.

Some people said, 'He divulged the secret after they left.'

Yet, but for separation, I would have been trusted in love.

Our neighbors, how lovely were the days of Kazimah,

when scattering separation had not yet noticed us.

Your nearness had served, against every calamity

befalling passion before separation, as shields.

In that dwelling, among its people, I had my heart's desire,

for its sake I forsook close friends and homeland.

Gazelles there enthralled me; their glances

lent the gazelles of Najd that wide-eyed beauty.

Dwelling-grounds where I once enjoyed ease

through union, while time took no notice.

Then, when they left and evening found the place empty

of every full moon that struck my heart the morning it gazed,

I stood there, and in its dwelling-grounds was made

public my secret, through the tears I let flow.

And I said, 'Here were their oryx calves,

striking us dead with the blades of their glances—and here.'

May my tears water their dwelling, for it has

a cloud of tears that has put the rainclouds to shame.

When a pouring raincloud clears away from it,

from the dwelling-grounds, my tears grant it a pouring cloud.

O absent ones, if time should grant you back,

after separation, we would wear its favors about our necks.

How many have the backs of swift she-camels borne with you:

fair sights that granted me no kindness!

And every supple, swaying figure stirred my longing,

resembling branches in poise and supple spear-shafts.

Some people blamed me for them, so I said to them,

'What business have reproachers with our beloveds and us?

Suppose us doves: we deem love of slender forms our

chosen course, as the cooing dove loves the branches.'

Doves cooed in the ban trees, singing loudly

from longing, though they had parted from neither mate nor home.

Then how must I fare, when the headlong she-camels are fitted with litters

and the people have brought up the litters for departure?

O my two reproachers, you have harshly rebuked a man

who gave no ear to blame concerning his beloveds.

This is the sanctuary; leave me in its dwelling-grounds,

to trail the halter of pleasure through its open spaces.

You two consoled me with it while the dwelling lay far away,

and with the beloveds, for a time after separation.

And she-camels remembered the sanctuary's land and became

thirst-mad, tugging against me at their nose-pegs toward the sanctuary.

They grew gaunt; the brisk trot had worn them down,

after once being plump in their halters.

I sing my verse to urge them on as they lean forward,

heading for Hadan among al-Munhana's hills.

Swimming in seas of mirage, you would take them

for ships pitching through it with love's riders aboard.

Verse that, when they tire, becomes their comfort,

through the tongue of a youth surpassing mankind in eloquence.

In every rhyme that has been kept free

from company with either halting speech or faulty diction.

Wandering verses, traveling through God's lands,

while poetry, for all its faults, stays at home.

At them, the noble man's sides sway when

he is stirred one day; another day they arouse resentments

against them and within them, although they remain untainted

by all the defilement and obscenity in other verse.

They never offered their hand to anyone but me,

since they saw him suited to what they do not desire.

Nor did they find in him poetry's subtle grace, nor

perform for his claim either obligatory or customary rites.

Turning away from people who possess

nothing of them but excessive pretension and toil.

    فالقومُ في غُمَّةٍ من حسرةٍ ومُنى

    What they hope for in poetry is what I now compose;

so these people are in anguish from regret and longing.
