Time has effaced the spring camps and playgrounds

that were dear to me because of their people.

The south wind obliterated their landmarks and altered

the camp ruins where the yearning lover fulfilled his desires.

Ruins whose dust I inhale, as though I

were scenting bosoms in the fragrance of the earth.

O rival of the full moon, you who have

a face whose radiance has made the mottled moon pale.

Once, union with you and closeness gathered

love's scattered bonds and restored departed youth.

    والدهرُ يُحدِثُ في بنيِه عجائبا

    Until separation intervened between us;

and time brings strange things upon its sons.

So it made pleasure's robe unadorned,

and the youth of that union grizzled and gray.

And you grew so distant that, in sleep, I see no

visiting apparition of you, nor any returning phantom.

Perhaps it will come to me by night with a promise,

if I sleep—whether true to its word or false.

And I began urging on the exhausted she-camels,

folding up the lands, eastward and westward.

Long-necked, they never crossed a wasteland

in the mirage without my imagining them as ships.

Unceasing toil bloodied their toe-tips, as though

swift pacing had become a relentless beating upon them.

Each a weary she-camel, her stride grown short,

carrying through the wastes a weary man distraught with love,

mounted upon her and others like her,

upon their humps and withers in the open wilderness.

She endured the torment of noonday heat, while above her

was a stout-hearted man who makes the blaze of noon melt.

So both endured, even had the ghaḍā trees turned

to spearheads and keen-edged swords barring reunion.

And the lover chooses to meet death

willingly, and faces the darkness without fear.

And the calamities of his doom are his lightest trials—

mere trifles, when separation is his calamity.

His eyes streamed tears, for far away

from them the company had gone; he took his eyes for clouds.

O my two companions, look toward Laʿlaʿ

at lightning that has made joy turn away from me.

Whenever I watched it, my eye overflowed,

weeping blood for that vanished union.

The loved ones departed Zarūd and left behind

a lovesick man keeping vigil with the stars in longing.

May the she-camels perish! How many a heart they tore apart

when they crossed barren wastes and desert plains.

Why do I blame the swift she-camels for taking away

my loved ones, yet not blame the cawing raven?

May Ibn Dāya be struck dumb for crying at our parting that day,

lamenting before the loved ones were dispersed.

I was not the first man to obey his heart,

and have it bring upon him the calamities of passion.

It is a halting place where, in its grounds, you have met

none but a yearning lover speaking to the ruined camps.

He thrills when an east wind blows, or when

a gray dove warbles, offering wonders to her mate.

The dove kindles my love for her whenever

she coos and the male dove answers her in reply.

And a woman with languid eyelids, whose gaze looses

an arrow that strikes true despite the distance,

plundered my heart with her glance, and it left me

restless on my pillow—may I never lose that plunderer!
