The dwellings' exile ought to weep for them

with tears from an eye whose streams never dry.

Dwellings that, despite the distance, stirred my longing:

their freshness before parting, and their sweetness.

Death is welcome to these souls

when, after closeness, their beloved departs from them.

He drew far away, leaving—his companionship gone

from the valley bend—no comfort for me to savor.

To God belong the boughs of union! Indeed, withered

swiftly, by parting's decree, their tender growth.

And to God belong nights: through all time endures

my sobbing over their like, and their own sobbing.

Whenever the soul recalls them, it melts with longing,

and the memory of days of meeting melts it.

Nights when my heart, in love, seemed

to conceal what their hearts concealed through the night.

Their companionship draws near to us whenever

Layla's watcher moves far from her in the morning.

So how lovely those nights, and their sweetness!

And how lovely their kindness and their sins!

And no collared dove, ever upon the ghada trees,

wailing with longing while cooing answers her,

yearns for the protected grounds more than my heart

when a gust of those winds arises.

Long have I stood among the dwellings since your departure,

shedding tears from a wounded eye.

Distraught, I do not heed, in her dwelling,

the censurer's zeal for painful rebukes.

Bewildered, I question every effaced trace,

with tears my daily drink and sickness my ally.

And many a wounded-hearted man, terrified

by parting, robbed of sleep and gaunt,

loves the gazelle of Hajir, though before it lie

two keen edges: those of spearheads and swords.

He delights in the breezes' wafting toward him

before dawn; that is the lover's scant solace.

Parched—who will let his burning thirst be quenched

one day, with the coolness of the beloved's sipped saliva?

Complaining to the ruins, after the beloved's departure,

    of parting's pain and the anguished one's burning thirst;

wasted, he says to his fortune, in his passion,

'Were you, in all you were, anything but meager?'

And to the wound in his heart's core on the day of separation:

'Would that you had never been—a wound picked raw within it!'

I have spent in this passion every store

I had gathered, inherited and newly acquired.

And I stood questioning every desolate dwelling

    about departed neighbors at al-Raqmatayn,

enamored of those whose waists are slender

beneath the boughs of their slim, graceful figures.

Time has passed, and of their promises I see

nothing but soothing hopes and delay,

from every graceful woman whose sash sways loosely

above a delicate waist like a braided cord.

The spears of their figures, when they appear, have no need,

though resembling al-Khatt's spears, of straightening.

O dwelling, toward whose quarters long have continued

my trotting and galloping across the long distance,

    upon every fleet, wild-ass-like she-camel,

in a fearsome wilderness, remote in its reaches!

I urge her onward, longing for the ban trees of the protected grounds,

and their shade, and the familiar dwelling.

For there the moons of curtained chambers are adorned

by their halos in spring and summer abodes.

And there I spent my youth, obedient

to heartache, held captive under passion's rule.

No garden that showers watered all night,

lush with drooping boughs and fluttering foliage,

where the breeze walks leisurely across its ground,

like a drinker drained of his senses,

renewing the robe of plants throughout its reaches,

ranging from embroidery to woven stripes,

is ever lovelier than pure, radiant verse

that I have arranged like closely set pearls.

My thoughts dictate it, and its sea overflows

in a swelling tide; that sea is never drained.

Passages that, when I put them together in order,

come to you like a necklace in their arrangement.

Its grander pieces are a splendid necklace,

or its finer ones a strand of ear ornaments.

Each a rhymed verse that, when I recite it,

overwhelms with a fragrance like blended perfume.

It comes easily to me; whenever I give it free rein

through thought, it proves never reluctant.

It comes with polished wording, noble,

from a noble mind, easy to guide.
