They departed, and life's sweetness departed when they did.

After separation, tears and I have a plight of our own.

By God, how many a soul they left behind in the dwelling-place,

love-worn, with pools from a torrent of tears!

He longs for Nuʿm and Nuʿman; what he seeks,

despite their remoteness, is Nuʿm and Nuʿman.

Alas! What have I, now she has gone, bidding farewell?

A heart yearning toward Abraq al-Hannan.

No good lies in a dwelling whose places of play enchant me

with beauty, if no inhabitants remain there.

After her, the home is not my home, even if it fills

my eyes with beauty; nor are homelands homelands.

I used to yearn for it when it was inhabited

by her, and that quarter's neighbors were truly neighbors.

May a plentiful downpour water the time of meeting,

roaring with thunder, low-clouded, pouring steadily.

A time of intimacy we spent in her courtyard,

while fortune smiled and time rejoiced.

And the beauties—whenever I wished, I found help

from their beauty and kindness in my passion.

Among them was one adorned with beauty, yet empty

of that which had come to fill my heart.

As though through her sidelong glances I were courted,

in our flirtation, by white antelopes and gazelles.

From among full moons who have attained perfection, so

no waning befalls them as it does the moons.

Slender of figure: when coquetry sways them

and its intoxication does too, the bān tree envies them in its native land. The dream-image once came—if only its visits had lasted—

to me when I slept, in brief visits and appearances.

In the days when my loved ones, who have gone far away,

were true to faith's pledges like me, as they had been.

    I never betrayed their pledge—no indeed—nor did

betrayal cross my mind, nor did they betray.

And today my lot, after they have gone, has become

after their long companionship, delay and evasion.

No forgetting of those who left ever crossed my mind, though

they wearied and turned away, for all their faults.

Nor, for the memory of my nights that passed away,

so blessed with the quarter's dear folk, is there any forgetting.

Among them, every dark-eyed woman, aquiline beneath her veil, has

a glance that slays and beguiles my heart.

She settled in Najd, which then became my desire,

when homelands and countries enticed people.

Before dawn, from the land of Kazimah, she was borne away

by choice camels roused from it, and traveling litters.

Lean within their halters, they seemed,

as they sped toward the valley's bend, like halter-ropes.

And in their nose-rings, hastening away,

racing the wind in the wilderness, they were male ostriches.

They skirted the peaks of Aja's landmark mountains,

and Salʿ and ʿUfan, before it, drew them onward.

    لم يُثنِها دونَه رمْثٌ وحَوْذانُ

    Then they set off, swaying gently within their reins;

neither ramth shrubs nor buttercups turned them aside before it.

O Hind, I have not forgotten where we stood on parting day,

nor the earth, soaked with my tears.

And [perhaps the pale camels] were saddled, seeking departure, while

the night's [perhaps crows] had neither flown nor been startled.

And no sorrowful soul forgets the place of parting,

parched and bewildered by the anguish of separation.

Our loved ones, if night lengthens its journey

and deserts and lowlands stand between us and you,

do not send me greetings on the breeze, for I have

a jealous heart, as my loved ones have known.

It passes the night between my ribs whenever there blows

an east wind that passes over you, and it is afraid.

And in the curtained chambers that sheltered your beauty

from gazing eyes are slender boughs and sand dunes.

They came to be surrounded, as the litters traveled,

by bright, unsheathed, blood-stained swords and spears.

O my two companions, but for longing, there would be no goading

of my sturdy she-camel through fatigue by the two camel-drivers' songs.
