The days of youth and the haunts of loved ones

Have faded, as the lettering of a book has faded.

Traces whose outline glimmers to your returning gaze,

After close scrutiny, like a tattoo traced in dye.

Foolishly I stood among the ruins, addressing

What cannot hear me or answer in return.

When I stood at her dwelling, I found nothing,

    Grief-stricken, save gray, drifting ash.

My tears dampened it, and I concealed them

With my clothes, for fear of revealing love's secret.

And it is folly for me to restrain my tears

There, when the reproaching women already know my plight.

The beloveds have left their springtime haunts, which

Had been the goal of my seeking and pursuit.

And a home's cheerful intimacy brings no pleasure

Except through the pleasant exchange of visits among age-mates.

How many a company departed from those dwellings,

Who were my cherished loved ones and companions.

If Time decrees reunion, I shall reproach them

For what they have done—yet it is no time for reproach.

Do you think life will return, its mouth smiling

With them, like lightning from a cloud pouring rain?

Or will Time return, bringing back what has passed?

It can never return once it has departed.

They have gone far, yet the causes of longing are near

To me, and remembering their days is my habit.

Youth has gone afar, yet I have not mourned its departure,

Though lovely in its cloak, splendid in its robe,

Hoping that reunion with the neighbors of al-Naqa

Would restore to me the season of my youth.

So may the clouds' raindrops water—no, rather their bounty,

Pouring down—the dwellings of Zaynab and Rabab,

Its white cloud-bank hanging low above the tents,

As though it had been fastened with the tent ropes.

A refuge for lovely, tender maidens, and a playground

For graceful beauties, and a gathering place for age-mates.
