Why has your eye not slept since separation?

That is only because something has compelled sleeplessness.

    Passion and yearning send, with

the meeting place far away, longing and grief to you.

You are no novice in the days of love, so do not

ignorantly suppose that love's anguish has become futile.

The least it brings is that, without cause, you cast

blame and charges of folly upon the beloveds over it.

    بيضُ الطِّلى كظباءِ المنحنى جيَدا

    Supple in stature, slender-waisted as the bān trees of the preserve;

    White of throat, long-necked as gazelles at the valley bend;

    غِيدُ الجسومِ بنفسي ذلكَ الغَيَدا

    Eyes dark against white, wide as the eyes of oryx;

Graceful of body—my life a ransom for that swaying grace!

How much blood they have shed with those eyes!

Yet I have seen no vengeance against them, nor blood-retribution.

The preserve's lightning stirred you to remembrance at times,

when it came into view above its valley bends and appeared.

Never did it flash but in my heart, like its flicker,

was a blaze of passion's fire, burning as it burned.

Two fires: the fire struck from the rainclouds never went out

beneath the darkness, nor did the embers of love go out.

This one flashes, and the other's blaze mirrors it

late at night, with a blaze of yearning that seldom cools.

O rider, whose broad-bellied mount tramples the gravel,

    striding like a male ostrich toward the preserve and the valley bend;

It journeys by night despite fatigue; no wide waste turns it

from its swift trot, nor does it reckon the distance long.

Tell the gazelle whose pledges have changed:

I remain true to that covenant he pledged.

I have not changed in love from what he knew,

nor stretched a hand toward forgetting him.

Our beloveds, may the days of union with you be watered

by a downpour that thunders whenever it drenches the hills.

If its downpour slackens or its flowing rain dwindles,

my eye sends it reinforcements from its own water.

O parting, woe to you! After them you left

the distraught lover neither patience nor endurance.

He once had abundant endurance, but it was taken away

by the driver of their mounts with the departing caravan, the day he chanted.

Where are the beloveds? They did not keep what they promised,

after separation fulfilled what it had promised.

    وِردي الدموعُ إذا ما شئتُ أن أرِدا

    They departed, and here I am amid the ruins after them;

my drink is tears whenever I wish to drink.

I shall surely praise a time that brought us together

at al-Raqmatayn, for the best of life is what is praised.

And someone said, before imminent parting, out of anguish

that had seized him as departure and separation drew near:

What will you do on the day the beloveds depart,

when you see that their dwelling has grown far away?

I said, while my heart held the heat of anguish's fire,

at parting, kindled by my deep-drawn sighs:

    My two hands—

    if parting is decreed—

I have kept them in reserve:

this one for my tears, and this one clinging to my liver.

No land have they settled in but I have come, through

the longing within me, to love that land.

Do not demand patience of me after they have departed

from al-'Aqiq, for my patience after them is exhausted.

O you who stand dejected in the dwelling's courtyards,

    scattering tears throughout its grounds,

bewildered, reminded by the traces after them

    of a happy life gone by with the neighbors of the sand dune;

burning with grief, hearing my poems and taking me,

as I sing them, for a warbling bird.

From every rhyme that enchants the mind,

I have breathed knots of its magic into knots.

I now have the sea as my watering place in this craft,

whenever I come to drink, while others sip scant water.

Poetry: when the versifiers hear its finely wrought lines,

those who denied it grudgingly acknowledge its excellence.

Groups of men have envied it; I see in them

neither judgment nor good sense in what they have pursued,

for no other reason than that I surpass them

with a mind that blazes whenever I kindle it.

May I never cease to be envied for excellence, and may they always

be unable to reveal their envy.
