My offense in the eyes of the fair women is unforgivable,

when the dawn of grayness shone clearly in my hair.

Dark-eyed beauties cleft my heart with their sidelong glances,

with each arrow whose draw is deep-rooted in their dark-eyed beauty.

So marvel at them—arrows that never miss,

from eyelids, without a bow or a bowstring.

How often they slept, heedless of me, ignoring what

the hand of parting had carved from my longing and sleeplessness.

And how often I broke the pledge of piety through infatuation

that revisits me for women of coquetry and modest reserve.

I bear a sickness from love's abiding traces that pervades me

throughout time, for those guarded by veils.

Slender-waisted women—the bough grows jealous when it sees

their figures, some swaying, others bending.

They disowned me after knowing me; and unceasingly

time replaces life's clarity with murk.

In the days when the bough of my youth was in carefree ease,

I gloried in the blossoms and fruit it bore.

O dwelling, my tears are an endowment for you whenever

the clouds withhold rain from the ruined camps.

Homes of my pleasure! How many a desire I fulfilled

there with graceful women—homes are valued for desires fulfilled.

And many a spring camp, where union with dusky women enfolded me

in its hours, beneath the shade of wild lote trees and acacias.

Hours favorable to us passed there,

sweet with the harvest of gardens and early mornings.

Where is the time that I once praised

for closeness, without faltering or tongue-tie?

Parting never crossed my mind, that I might beware of it,

nor did I fault it for the danger it held.

I dally with every guileless youth; through his charms

I spend the night in peril from him and from my longing.

O face of his, show me a full moon when there rise

from it first gleams that let me do without the moon.

As for each woman whose stature is a fresh green bough,

her lover's share of her is nothing but gazing.

The wind would never have blown fragrant from Najd

but for my passion for the scent of its fragrant coolness.

Nor would my tears have flowed while we were together,

except for what my loved ones knew of my apprehension,

out of fear; and but for that, never would have halted

my riding camels between resolve's approach to water and its return.

No indeed! Nor, after closeness, would I have been content

with a trace of them, despite their dwelling's remoteness.

They are the beloved, even if they betray, even if they break

my pledge; I have not swerved from my pledge or my remembrance.

How many a lover they have ruined in passion, without

a fault—and how much blood has been shed there, wasted and unavenged!

He laments the pain of abandonment, in secret and in public,

a lament that leaves its mark on solid stone.

And these are the dwellings: how many burning griefs they have renewed

for the love-crazed man, through the traces within them.

He visits them after their charming maidens have departed

from them, then wipes the overflow of tears with his waistcloths.

And in my ribs, after their departure, is a fire

of longing, working as fire works in ʿushar shrubs.

Will I ever be seen, with the tribe's dwellings near

me, free of sorrows and brooding thoughts?

Far from it! This is a heart that cannot be turned

from love by the vicissitudes love holds.
