Is it lightning appearing, or the flash of a radiant mouth

    Gleaming between face-veils and head-veils?

It shines for us beneath the darkness, and we find our way

By it, as by a lamp's radiance or the brightness of dawn.

I yearn for the honeyed wine of his saliva,

When the drinking companion thirsts with longing for wine.

And I inhale the sweet fragrance of his wafts,

Finding it enough, without the breath of perfume and scent.

Were it not for love, I would not grow distraught whenever

The rainclouds' lightning gleams in crimson robes.

Nor, but for separation, would I weep when there passes

A north wind over the sandy flat, musky in fragrance,

Passing over Layla's sides at evening,

And she entrusts it with the fragrance of her breast and throat.

Thus it recalls to me days of union I spent

With her, between the landmarks of al-Muhassab and al-Hijr:

Delightful in their hours of meeting, swiftly

They passed; yet I never cease remembering them.

I long for her days, and my passion grows

For her through the phantom vision that travels by night.

When it visits me, I complain to it, as though it

Bolsters my strength or lightens my burden.

My complaint to it was not born of ignorance,

But is something by which I ease my inmost heart.

Indeed, by the riding camels, bowed beneath their nose-rings,

Complaining of swift trotting's pain across the empty expanse:

Lean, worn down by their swift gait, weary,

Gaunt from wasting, like the halter-ropes upon their muzzles.

They hurry onward bearing figures; when there circulates among them

The wine of love and longing, they reel from drunkenness.

They sway high upon the withers whenever

The driver of the noble camels sings from separation's anguish.

Rouse them, and fear no rugged ground, for they

Surge like thirsty camels along the rough track.

Ships of night, worn down by travel, they bend

Like bows of nab‘-wood, carrying travelers through the night.

The strain of speeding wore them down until it left them

Panting in their yellow nose-rings from its ceaseless strain.

When diverted from water, thirst leaves them by evening

Straining toward it like wry-necked beasts if they miss their watering.

My two friends, but for longing, I would not, whenever

A landmark appeared, let my tears break loose and stream for it.

Nor would I wear out the pale camels in the deserts, whenever

Their steps erase a line and rise beyond another.

I visit the dusty wastes, fearing no darkness,

When the weakling's endurance fails before grim calamities.

    لقد أنفدا ما كانَ عندي مِن صَبرِ

    I am patient—but not with separation and disdain;

Those two have exhausted all the patience I possessed.

How could my heart seem steadfast against separation,

When the one it loves has gone—even were it made of stone?

Indeed, a man who spends his evening questioning a dwelling

Whose inhabitants have left is surely at a loss.

And a time in which a lover cannot see

His loved ones in their dwelling is no part of life.

I yearn for the one who left the sands of ‘Alij,

And long for the wild lote trees and sidr trees there.

And inhale the breezes coming from his land

To dispel the burning thirst I suffer in my breast.

My breaths catch fire whenever I remember him,

And I imagine their passage from me runs over embers.

Perhaps a phantom of you, visiting by night,

Will come by fate when my eyes doze.

I find no remedy while awake; perhaps I may

See you, if they favor me with their scant dozing.

Are the eyelids forbidden to doze when

A north wind travels at night to al-Ghawr from Hijr?

I lost life's sweetness when there bore you away

The long-bodied she-camel, O mistress of the curtained chamber.

As though her forelegs, as she heads toward the ghada trees,

Were the wings of an eagle of the air swooping to its nest.

I have never ceased fearing separation, even before it came,

For the nights were fashioned for treachery.

Is there a way for me to renew a glance

At your radiant cheek, as I once knew it,

And sip cool, gleaming moisture from your mouth,

Whose front teeth outshine gleaming white pearls?

If time should grant me nearness—time I reproached

For distance—it would be a favor from time's hand.

What excuse have I, if you are far from me,

For not riding through terrors toward you?

I shall mount the great-humped, long, lean camels, rushing onward

Despite weariness in the wilderness, from sheer fright.

When the birdlike camel-driver trills, it is as though

The pale camels disdain being driven by harsh cries.

They shun the fruitful grounds after every raincloud

Appears, though the grounds are unveiled in green gowns.

The soul longs for them, now that embroidery adorns

The hilltop meadows with blossoms from the falling rain.

And I seek union with you, long hard to attain,

By the edge of keen white swords and tawny spears,

And with champions of war, whose brows never emerge

From the dust except like radiant stars.

They plunge into battle with gray horses, which wheel back

From the spear-thrusting in proud display, their coats chestnut-red.

If I do not draw near you through my resolve,

There is no good in life, whether sweet or bitter.
