As for youth, it is a thing hard to attain.

It is gone, since the golden sheen of this life is gone.

Nothing remains, now that its first freshness has passed,

that I fear and dread when it arrives.

The loved ones drew away when they saw hair

on my head, its darkness startled by the dawn of gray.

And all that my heart suffered from their aversion

I had expected before this day.

What a heart, by God! How often it laments its burdens

of passion, while its tormentor fills it with sorrow.

    A heart that has grown used to its solace in love;

so if it drew away from love, by evening it would be seeking it.

And a fawn whose obstinacy kept wearing me out:

so I went on, now greeting him, now reproaching him.

But he would not relent toward me, his temple-lock curved,

after its scorpion had stung this heart.

His excessive fault-finding kept threatening me

with every hurt his avoidance had done my heart.

And I came, after a closeness that had brought us together

in its season, to watch for him like the crescent of Eid al-Fitr.

And my lot became a torment without end,

after the union whose sweetest part had departed.

And he began keeping me away, though I had never ceased

drawing him close despite his increasing fault-finding.

O lightning, at night my heart, whenever there flashed

a spark from you, mirrored it with its own blaze.

And I became given over to my tears in their dwellings,

after the loved ones were gone, shedding them and pouring them out.

When I stand there with tears streaming,

I mix them with the blood of my eyelids.

So alas for tears! When the doves lament upon

the ban trees of Salʿ, I see the earth drink them.

Tears that, in love's cause, have never ceased

to help me through every ordeal I have undertaken.

Its easiest trial is the same to me—for I have eyes

that aid me through it with tears—as its hardest.

This heart has shown me that I am a man

who, in love, follows the path it chooses.

And often, when doves sang in a breeze

among the thickets, their joyous trilling saddened me.

    طيبُ الوصالِ به قد كنتُ أنهبُه

    I recalled love's dwelling, whose inhabitant I had not forgotten;

there I once plundered the sweetness of union.

Its lovely maidens departed from it, and I was disowned

by its playground of love, after it had known me.

I wept there, while the gray doves' lament helped me

mourn separation, and the tongue of tears lamented it.

Yearning for a watering place untainted by murk—

how clear its draught was before the loved ones' departure,

with the sweetness of a life we spent in mutual exchange!

It once kept me company awhile, and I kept it company.

If its delights have left me against my will,

by force, and separation's hand has come to steal it away,

then I shall praise the days of its companionship

with a mind long astonished by my poetry,

and a tongue which, whenever speech grows earnest upon it,

is awed by that speech's play with its meanings.

So what yearning heart have I not stirred to greater love?

And what mind have I not spent the night beguiling with it?

Verse that, if all other poems become

of spurious descent, I trace back to Adnan.
