غلامٌ بها صرفاً فأوسعتُه زَجْرا
I asked for water in a vessel, and there came to me
I called for water in a vessel, so a boy
a boy with undiluted wine, so I heaped rebukes upon him.
Brought it to me pure, and I chided him
فقالَهوso he said, “It is” الماءُthe water القَراحُpure واِنَّماand it was only
فقالَهو الماءُ القَراحُ واِنَّما
تجلَّىwas reflected لهاin it خدَّيmy cheek فأوهمكَso it made you imagine الخَمْراthe wine
تجلَّى لها خدَّي فأوهمكَ الخَمْرا
He said, “It is pure water; it was only
Sternly. But he said, “It is limpid rain-water;
my cheek reflected in it that made you think it was wine.”
My ruddy cheeks made you think it was wine.”
