لَمّاwhen دَعانيcalled me الهَوىlove مِنfrom رَبَّةِthe lady of الكِلَلِthe canopies
صَرفتُI turned away عَمَّنfrom whoever سِواهاother than her نَحوَهاtoward her أَمَليmy hope
When love called me from the lady of the canopies,
I turned my hope away from all others toward her.
وَجِئتُand I came أَقصِدَهاseeking her فيalong أَوضِحِthe clearest of السُبُلِthe paths
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen شارَفَتbrought near بيwith me قادَةُthe guides of الإِبِلِthe camels
And I came seeking her along the clearest paths,
until, when the camel guides brought me close to
نَجداًNajd بَدَتappeared نارُهاher fire عَنon يُمنَةِthe right side of الجَبَلِthe mountain
فَظَنَّso thought صَحبيmy companions أَنthat دونَbefore الضِرامِthe blaze رَدىdeath
Najd, her fire appeared to the right of the mountain.
My companions thought death barred the way to the blaze,
فَهَوَّمواso they dozed وَقَصَدتُand I headed toward النارَthe fire مُنفَرِداalone
وَقَدand indeed تَيَقَنتُI became certain فيin تَأميمِهاseeking it رَشَداًright guidance
so they dozed, while I headed for the fire alone,
certain that seeking it was right guidance.
وَفيand in اِقتِرابيmy approach لَهاto her مِنهاfrom her سَمِعتُI heard نِداa call
عَنfrom جانِبِيَّboth my sides وَمِنand from خَلفيbehind me وَمِنand from قُبَليbefore me
And as I approached her, I heard from her a call
from both my sides, from behind me, and from before me.
فَأَكثَرُso most of الصَحبَthe companions مِنfrom دونِshort of الحِمىthe sanctuary وَقَفواthey stopped
وَأَنكَرواand they denied بِاللِوىat al-Liwa ماwhat البَنقاal-Banqa (uncertain place-name) عَرَفواthey knew
Most of my companions stopped short of the sanctuary,
and at al-Liwa denied what they had known at al-Banqa.
وَموهواand they dissembled بِهَوىwith love of لَيماءَLayma وَاِنحَرَفواand they turned aside
عَنِfrom الطَريقِthe path وَلَمand did not يَدرواknow بِمَنwith whom كَلِفواthey were enamored
They feigned love for Layma and turned aside
from the path, not knowing with whom they were enamored.
فَعَوَّضواso they compensated بَعدَafter طولِthe length of الكَدِّthe toil بِالقَفلِwith the return journey
وَأَصبَحواand they came to be فيin مَدارٍa circuit كُلَّماwhenever اِحتَمَلواthey broke camp
So, after long toil, they took the return journey as recompense.
And they came to move in a circle: whenever they broke camp,
دارواthey circled وَفيand in دارِهِمtheir dwelling دونَshort of الصَفاal-Safa نَزَلواthey settled
دارٌa dwelling بِهاin it الهَونُhumiliation وَالأَلآمُand pains وَالخَبَلُand derangement
they circled back, settling in their dwelling short of al-Safa:
a dwelling of humiliation, pains, and derangement,
لِأَنَّهُمbecause they عَنfrom مَصاعيmy striving (uncertain reading) عَدلِهاher justice عَدَلواthey turned aside
مِنfrom حَيثُwhere ضَلّوthey strayed عَنfrom الإِتيانِcoming فيin الظُلَلِthe shades
because they turned aside from my striving for her justice,
having strayed from coming beneath the shades.
رامواthey sought الوِصالَunion وَعَنand from أَبوبِهاher doors (irregular spelling) اِنقَطَعواthey cut themselves off
وَجاحَدواand they denied ماwhat رَأَوthey saw مِنهاof her وَماand what سَمِعواthey heard
They sought union, yet cut themselves off from her doors,
and denied what they had seen of her and what they had heard.
فَغودِرواso they were left فِرَقاًin factions مِنfrom بَعدِafter ماthat اِجتَمَعواthey gathered
وَبِالدَعاويand with claims عَلَيهاagainst her ضَلَّةًin error رَجِعواthey returned
So they were left in factions after gathering together,
and returned astray, making claims against her,
يُغوونَthey lead astray عَنfrom نَهجِهاher path السُلّاكَthe wayfarers بِالحِيَلِby tricks
فَاِبعِدso put far away بِهِمwith them وَبِنَهجيand in my path فيin هَواكَyour love لُذِtake refuge
leading wayfarers astray from her path by tricks.
Away with them! In your love, take refuge in my path.
وَبِاِسمِand in the name of وَجديmy ecstasy مِنfrom شَرِّthe evil of الغُواةِthe misleaders عُذِseek protection
وَاِصحَبand keep company لِمَنwith whoever بِلَبّانِwith the milk of الواجِدينَthose in ecstasy غُذيwas nourished
And in the name of my ecstasy seek protection from the misleaders' evil.
Keep company with one nourished on the milk of those in ecstasy.
وَخُذand take أَوامِرَهاher commands فيin الحُبِّlove مُتَّخِذيyou who choose me
تُشهِدكَwill show you شَمسُthe sun of ضُحاهاher morning الظُهرُnoon بِالطَفَلِat dusk
And take her commands in love, you who choose me;
the sun of her morning will show you noon at dusk.
فَتَغتَديso you will spend your days بِنَهارٍin a daylight لَيسَnot يَغشاهُshrouds it
لَيلٌnight بِظِلٍّin a shade لِلَيلىbelonging to Layla طابَwas pleasant مَأواهُits shelter
Then you will live in a daylight never shrouded by
night, beneath a shade of Layla's whose shelter is sweet.

No servant dwelling there suffered the sun, and his master
with kindness of his own, cared for him and granted him

a guardianship from which he was never removed.
She bore my spirit toward her by night, after taking it captive,
وَسَرَّتِand she dispelled الهَمَّsorrow عَنfrom قَلبيmy heart غَداةَon the morning سَرَتshe journeyed by night

and lifted sorrow from my heart on the morning she journeyed.
And from the earth's folds she unfurled my spirit for me in the heights,
وَأَظهَرَتنيand she revealed me بِهاthrough her ليto me عِندَماwhen ظَهَرَتshe appeared

and through her revealed me to myself when she appeared.
And with hopes I made my soul safe from dread.
فيin بَرقِthe lightning of مَبسِمِهاher smiling mouth لَمّاwhen أَضاءَit shone مَشَواthey walked

In the lightning of her smiling mouth, when it shone, they walked;
and when it darkened, they grew blind to the course of the road.
وَاِستَغشَأواand they veiled themselves مِنagainst دُعاهاher call ماwhat عَلَيهِupon it نَشواthey were reared

مِنof رَفضِهاrejecting her وَبِمُستَنِّand against one racing along الغَرامِpassionate love وَشواthey informed
Against her call they veiled themselves in what they had been reared upon:
rejection of her; and they denounced the one racing in love
إِلىto عَداهاher enemies بِزَورِwith falsehood of القَولِspeech وَالخَطَلِand idle babble
قالواthey said بِأَرخَصِat the cheapest of قَوليmy words فيin هَواهُlove of him غَلاhe went too far
to her enemies with false speech and idle babble.
Of my slightest words they said, 'He has gone too far in loving him,'

ignorant of one who rose above the speech of those describing him.
And had they seen some of what he revealed to me,

in an instant they would see only a love-crazed one turning away [wording uncertain];
and with vindication the reproachers would cease reproaching me.
إِنif غابَvanished بِيَwith me الطَرفَthe gaze عَنهُfrom him فيin تَحَجُّبِهِhis veiling himself

If my gaze takes me away from him when he veils himself,
then my heart, through him, becomes his witness.

No—by the coolness that guarded my breast with his draught—
my heart did not swerve from him as he changed

The tale of my ecstasy is ancient in love of him;

delighting my gaze in sleep with the sight of him.
Would that he would generously grant me my hope in wakefulness!

Nothing but my sleeplessness summoned his phantom by night,
and nothing but my thoughts revealed him before my eyes.

in status, wealth, intimate companions, and servants.
