Since the dwellings became empty of those I love,

the four winds have effaced their landmarks.

    فَجَرَت عَلَيهِم لا عَلَيها الأَدمُعُ

    And rain forsook their ruins when they turned away;

so tears flowed for them, not for those ruins.

They cried, "Departure!" and bade me farewell; then turned

my heart to bid me farewell that evening when they took their leave.

And they journeyed by night; my body after them, like their courtyards,

is a wasteland, bereft of my two eyes and of my heart.

So marvel at a heart unsettled by rejection:

how love's anguish, lodged within it, has come to rest.

And at tears whose downpour makes the hills swell,

yet they do not quench the burning thirst of the one who sheds them.

And when I see the vast expanse [too narrow] for a portion

of my burning anguish—how could the ribs contain it?

And when he urged their she-camels onward on the day of parting,

how did he deafen the ear, though he was the one making it hear?

They lifted beauty onto camels, and through separation

veiled themselves from my sight after being unveiled.

So my life's remnant, after the sweetness of its union,

is cut to pieces by the blades of their estrangement's span.

Away with an abode that brought murk after clarity,

where the lodger is struck by every calamity!

No newcomer there was gladdened by his arrival

without saddening his kin as he bade farewell.

And life in you, even if its span grows long,

is like the blink of an eye, or a flash of lightning.
