أَلفانِيَ الدَهرُ لَما مَسّني حَجَراً
أَذكىmore fragrant مِنَthan المِسكِmusk لَمّاwhen مَسّنيtouched me الحَجَرُthe stone
أَذكى مِنَ المِسكِ لَمّا مَسّني الحَجَرُ
When Time touched me, it found me to be a stone—
Time abraded me until a stone it made,
More fragrant than musk when the stone touched me.
Yet musk I became, for the stone did me invade.
