هَبكَsuppose that you ابتليتَwere afflicted بِفَقرٍwith poverty
هَبكَ ابتليتَ بِفَقرٍ
وَكُنتَand you were مالِكَmaster of مالِكyour wealth
وَكُنتَ مالِكَ مالِك
Suppose you were afflicted with poverty,
You have been tried with poverty
Though you once were master of your wealth;
And you used to own wealth
فَماthen what لِفَضلِكَwith your merit أَودىhas perished
فَما لِفَضلِكَ أَودى
أَجِبanswer وَماand what لِكَمالِكwith your perfection
أَجِب وَما لِكَمالِك
Why, then, has your merit perished?
Yet your virtue did not perish
Answer—and what of your perfection?
Answer, and what about your perfection
