عَيَّرَتْنيshe reproached me تَرْكَforsaking الـمُدامِwine وقالَتْand she said
عَيَّرَتْني تَرْكَ الـمُدامِ وقالَتْ
هَلْhas … ? جَفاهاhe shunned it مِنَamong الكِرامِthe noble أديبُa cultivated man
هَلْ جَفاها مِنَ الكِرامِ أديبُ
She reproached me for forsaking wine and said:
She blamed me for abandoning wine and said,
“Has any cultivated man among the noble shunned it?
"Has an educated man spurned it with disdain?"
هِيَit تَحْتَbeneath الظَّلامِthe darkness نُورٌlight وفيand in الأكْـthe livers (first part)
هِيَ تَحْتَ الظَّلامِ نُورٌ وفي الأكْـ
ـبادِcompletion of “livers” بَرْدٌcoolness وفيand in الخُدودِthe cheeks لَهِيبُa blaze
ـبادِ بَرْدٌ وفي الخُدودِ لَهِيبُ
It is light beneath the darkness, and in the liv-
Under the veil, she is light; in the desert, coolness;
-ers, coolness, and in the cheeks, a blaze.”
In her cheeks, a blaze.
قُلتُI said ياO هذهyou, woman عَدَلْتِyou turned aside عَنِfrom النُّصْـthe counsel (first part)
قُلتُ يا هذه عَدَلْتِ عَنِ النُّصْـ
ـحِcompletion of “counsel” وماand no للرَّشادِfor sound judgment منكِfrom you نَصيبُa share
ـحِ وما للرَّشادِ منكِ نَصيبُ
I said, “O woman, you have turned away from coun-
I said, "O you who have turned from wisdom's path,
-sel, and sound judgment has no share in you.
Who spurns good counsel will get no gain from me.
إنَّهاindeed it للسُّتورِto the veils هَتْكٌrending وبالأَلْـand to the intellects (first part)
إنَّها للسُّتورِ هَتْكٌ وبالأَلْـ
ـبابِcompletion of “intellects” فَتْكٌdestruction وبالـمَعادِand in the hereafter ذُنوبُsins
ـبابِ فَتْكٌ وبالـمَعادِ ذُنوبُ
It is a rending of veils, and to the intel-
To reveal what's veiled is to rend; with lips that entice,
-lects, destruction, and in the hereafter, sins.”
On Judgement Day, many sins to see."
