كَأَنَّas though يُوسُفَJoseph لَمّاwhen ماتَhe died وَلّاهُhe appointed him
كَأَنَّ يُوسُفَ لَمّا ماتَ وَلّاهُ
O young gazelle, without whom beauty's face would vanish,
As though Joseph, when he died, had appointed him ruler.
وَلّاهmade him ruler رِقىcharms ظَرفٍof grace فيin شَمائِلِهِhis nature
وَلّاه رِقى ظَرفٍ في شَمائِلِهِ
فَاِشتَطَّso he exceeded all bounds فيin الحُكمِrule لَماwhen أَنemphatic particle تَولّاهُhe assumed it
فَاِشتَطَّ في الحُكمِ لَما أَن تَولّاهُ
The charms of grace in his nature made him ruler,
So he exceeded all bounds in rule once he assumed it.

Have mercy on a lovesick youth whom none can save
From love's engulfing depths except you and God.
