ياO مَنyou who يَبيتُspends the night مُحِبّهُhis lover
يا مَن يَبيتُ مُحِبّهُ
مِنهُbecause of him بِلَيلَةِin a night أَنقَدِAnqad (the hedgehog)
مِنهُ بِلَيلَةِ أَنقَدِ
O you whose lover spends the night
O you who spend the night consumed with love of him
because of you, sleepless as Anqad the hedgehog;
In a single night more fiery than years
إِنif غِبتَyou are absent عَنيfrom me سُمتَنيyou subject me to
إِن غِبتَ عَني سُمتَني
وَشكَthe imminence of الرَدىdeath فَكَأَنso it is as though قَدِalready
وَشكَ الرَدى فَكَأَن قَدِ
if you are absent from me, you subject me
If you are absent from me, it destroys me
to imminent death—as though it had already come.
And almost kills me, as if I were dead
