إِنَّindeed الَّذيthat which رَهَنَheld in pledge الفُؤادَthe heart قَتُولاdeadly in beauty
وَجهٌa face أُعيرwas lent مَلاحةًloveliness وَقَبُولاand charm
Indeed, the deadly one that held the heart in pledge
He who has pledged his heart unto death,
Is a face lent loveliness and charm.
A face he borrowed, accepting and kind,
وَجهٌa face كَأَنَّas though بِهِin it ضِياءَthe radiance of المُشتَريJupiter
وَكَأَنَّand as though فيهِin it رَوضةًa garden وَقَبولاand an east wind
A face as though Jupiter's radiance were in it,
A face like the moon in its radiant light,
And as though it held a garden and an east wind.
In it, a garden of beauty to find.
حاشىfar be it لِحُسنِكَfor your beauty أَنto يردّreturn مُعارهwhat was lent to it
وَلِرَهنِand for the pledge of وُدّيmy love أَنto يُرىbe seen مَحلولاreleased
May your beauty never return what was lent to it,
Too fair your beauty for borrowed attire,
And may the pledge of my love never be seen released.
And the pledge of my love to be undone,
إِلفانtwo intimates مُمتَزجانِintermingled فيunder حُكمِthe rule of الهَوىlove
كَالماءِlike water مازجَmingled with فيin الكُؤوسِthe cups شَمولاwine
Two intimates mingled under love's rule,
In love's dominion, two spirits entwine,
Like water that mingled with wine in the cups.
Like water and wine mixed in a cup as one.
