أَقولُI say لِشادِنٍto a young gazelle فيin الحُسنِbeauty فَردٍpeerless
يَصيدُhe captures بِطَرفِهِwith his glance قَلبَthe heart of الجَليدِthe strong-willed man
I say to a young gazelle, peerless in beauty,
I tell Shādīn, unparalleled in beauty,
Who captures with his glance the heart of the strong-willed:
Who captures hearts with a glance of his eye:
مَلَكتَyou possess الحُسنَbeauty أَجمَعَall of it فيin قوامٍa figure
فَلاso do not تَمنَعwithhold وُجُوباًwhat is due عَنfrom وُجودِwhat is possessed
“You possess all beauty in a single form,
"You possess all beauty in your form,
So do not withhold what is due from what you possess.
So do not refuse to exist just to avoid pain.
وَذَلِكَand that أَنto تَجودَgive generously لِمُستَهامٍto a love-stricken man
بَرَشفِwith a sip of رُضابِكَyour saliva العَذبِsweet البَرودِcool
And that means being generous to a love-stricken man
Rather be generous with your pleasing smile
With a sip of your sweet, cool saliva.”
And refreshing sweetness, like cold water.
فَقالَthen he said أَبوAbu (father of) حَنيفَةَHanifa ليfor me إِمامٌan imam
فَعِنديso in my view لاno زَكاةَobligatory alms عَلىincumbent upon الوَليدِthe child
He said, “Abu Hanifa is my imam,
But Abu Hanifa said: ‘For me, there is
So, in my view, no alms-tax is due from a child.”
No zakat due on a newborn child.’"
