أَرادَhe wished أَنto يُخفيhide هَواهُhis love فَقَدyet indeed
أَرادَ أَن يُخفي هَواهُ فَقَد
نَمَّbetrayed بِماof what تُخفيconceal أَساريرُهhis facial features
نَمَّ بِما تُخفي أَساريرُه
He wished to hide his love, yet
He wanted to hide his love, yet it was disclosed
his features betrayed what they concealed.
By what his inmost thoughts concealed
وَكَيفَand how يُخفيhide داءَهُhis illness مُدنَفٌan ailing man
وَكَيفَ يُخفي داءَهُ مُدنَفٌ
قَدalready ذابَmelted مِنfrom فَرطِexcess of الأَسىsorrow رِيرُهhis marrow
قَد ذابَ مِن فَرطِ الأَسى رِيرُه
And how can an ailing man hide his illness,
And how can one whose love's betrayed disguise his pain
when his marrow has melted from overwhelming sorrow?
When anguish melts away his bed
