ضاقَgrew narrow ذَرعيmy endurance مِنfrom هَوىlove of قَمرٍa moon
ضاقَ ذَرعي مِن هَوى قَمرٍ
قَمَرُmoon of القَلبِthe heart وَماyet not شَعَراhe was aware
قَمَرُ القَلبِ وَما شَعَرا
My endurance has failed from love of a moon,
the heart’s moon—yet he was unaware.
لَيتَif only أَجفانيmy eyelids بِهِin him سَعِدتfound happiness
لَيتَ أَجفاني بِهِ سَعِدت
فَتَرىand so they might see الجَفنَthe eyelid الَّذيthat فَتَراgrew languid
فَتَرى الجَفنَ الَّذي فَتَرا
If only my eyelids could rejoice in him,
and behold the eyelid that grew languid.
