بِنَفسيwith my life أَخٌa brother قَدindeed بَرّنيhas been kind to me بِشكاتِهِwith his complaint
وَلَمand did not يَجعَلِmake الحمىfever حمىa protective barrier دونَbefore مالِهhis wealth
My life for a brother who has honored me by confiding his suffering,
and has not made his fever a barrier guarding his wealth.
فَطابَso he grew fragrant ثَناءًin praise بَينَamid أَثناءِthe folds of سُقمِهِhis illness
كَطيبِlike the fragrance of نَسيمِthe breath of الريحِthe wind عِندَat اِعتِلالِهits weakening
Thus praise of him grew fragrant amid the folds of his illness,
like the sweet breath of the wind as it grows faint.
بِودّيit is my wish لَوif only نَفَّستُI relieved عَنهُfrom him سقامَهُhis sickness
بِنَفسِيَwith my own self لَوif only نافَستُهُI vied with him فيin اِحتِمالِهbearing it
I wish I could relieve him of his sickness
with my own self—if only I could vie with him in bearing it—
فَلَمso did not تُصِبِafflict الأَوصابُailments راحَةَthe ease of جِسمِهِhis body
وَلَمand did not تَخطرoccur الأَشجانsorrows يَوماًever بِبالِهto his mind
so no ailments would disturb his body's ease,
and sorrows would never cross his mind.
