    A gazelle took me captive and banished sleep.

    So welcome, captivity to the cherished gazelle!

    He stood alone in beauty among the fair,

    So Love lodged him in the very cores of hearts.

    تَرى فيهِ حُمرَةَ سَيفٍ خَضيبِ

    And he gloried in a glance that spills blood;

    You see in it the redness of a bloodstained sword.

    Whenever his face appears, rising

    As the crescent rises, despite the watcher,

    Then the stars of our joy are rising,

    And the stars of our loneliness are setting.
