سَلَّunsheathed الرَبيعُspring عَلىagainst الشِتاءِwinter صَوارِماًkeen swords
تَرَكتهُthey left him مَجروحاًwounded بِلاwithout إِغمادِsheathing
Spring unsheathed keen swords against winter;
Spring unsheathed keen swords against winter.
they left him wounded, without returning to their scabbards.
They left him wounded, without being sheathed.
وَبَكَتand wept لَهُfor him عَينُthe eye of السَحابِthe clouds بِأَدمُعٍwith tears
ضَحِكَتlaughed لِساجِمِهاat their streaming رُبىthe hills of الأَنجادِthe uplands
The cloud’s eye wept for him with tears,
And the clouds' eye wept tears for him.
while the upland hills laughed at its pouring rain.
At their streaming, the upland hills laughed.
وَبَدَتand appeared شَقائِقُهاtheir anemones خِلالَamid رِياضِهاtheir gardens
تُزهىglorying بِثَوبيin two robes of حُمرَةٍredness وَسَوادِand blackness
Their anemones appeared amid their meadows,
And their anemones appeared amid their gardens,
glorying in twin robes of crimson and black,
glorying in two robes of red and black.
فَكَأَنَّهاso, as though they were بِنتُthe daughter of الشِتاءِwinter تَوَجَّعَتgrieved
لِمُصابِهِat his affliction كَشَقيقَةِlike a full sister of الأَولادِthe children
as though together they were winter’s daughter, grieving
So they seemed to be winter's daughter, grieving
over his affliction like a full sister among his offspring.
at his affliction, like the children's sister.
فَقُنوso the intensity of حُمرَتِهاtheir redness خِضابُthe stain of نَجيعِهِhis shed blood
وَسَوادُand the blackness of كِسوَتِهاtheir clothing لِباسُa garment of حِدادِmourning
Thus her red color is the dye of his lifeblood,
So their deep crimson is the stain of his blood,
and the black of her attire is a garment of mourning.
and the black of their clothing is mourning dress.
