صَدفَturned away الحَبيبُthe beloved بِوَصلِهِwith his companionship
صَدفَ الحَبيبُ بِوَصلِهِ
فَجَفاso forsook رُقاديmy sleep إِذwhen صَدَفhe turned away
فَجَفا رُقادي إِذ صَدَف
The beloved turned away, withholding his company;
My beloved came with his affection,
so sleep forsook me when he turned away.
So my slumber left when he came.
وَنَثَرتُand I scattered لُؤلُؤَpearls عَبرَةٍa tear
وَنَثَرتُ لُؤلُؤَ عَبرَةٍ
أَضحىbecame لَهاfor it جَفنيmy eyelid صَدَفa shell
أَضحى لَها جَفني صَدَف
And I scattered pearls of tears;
And I shed the pearls of my tears -
my eyelid became their shell.
My eyelids became like seashells.
