جُفونٌeyelids قَدindeed تَمَلَّكَهاhas taken possession of them السّهادُsleeplessness
وَجَنبٌand a flank لاnot يُلائِمُهُsuits it مِهادُa bed
Eyelids possessed by sleeplessness,
Eyelids conquered by slumber,
And a flank that no bed suits;
A side unfit for rest's cushion,
وَأحداثٌand calamities أَصابَتنيhave struck me وَقَوميand my people
يَذلّbecomes submissive مِنَfrom الحَليمِthe forbearing man لَهاto them القِيادُsubmission
And calamities that have struck me and my people,
Events struck me and my people,
Before which even the forbearing man submits.
Subduing with them even the steadfast leader.
فَقَدfor indeed شَطّتhave carried far away بِناwith us وَبِهمand with them دِيارٌlands
وَفَرّقand has sundered جامِعَwhat unites الشَملِthe company البِعادُdistance
For lands have borne us and them far apart,
So it tore away our homelands and theirs,
And distance has sundered what held us together.
Separating the unifier - distance.
أَقولُI say وَفيand in فُؤاديmy heart نارُa fire of وَجدٍlonging
لَهاfor it ماwhat lies بَينَbetween أَحشائيmy entrails اِتّقادُa blaze
I say, with a fire of longing in my heart,
I say, while my heart holds fire and passion
Its blaze burning amid my entrails,
That burns between my guts.
وَللأَحزانِand for sorrows فيin صَدريmy breast اِعتِلاجٌa tumult
وَلِلأَفكارِand for thoughts فيin قَلبيmy heart اِطِّرادُunceasing succession
And sorrows wrestling within my breast,
And in my chest the sorrows writhe,
And thoughts succeeding one another in my heart:
While thoughts race on in my heart.
أَلاah هَلwill there be بِالأَحِبَّةِwith the loved ones مِنany لمامٍa brief meeting
وَهَلand will شَملُthe togetherness of السُرورِjoy بِهمwith them معادُbe restored
Ah, will there be any brief meeting with my loved ones?
Oh, is there with loved ones any union?
And will our joyful union with them be restored?
Will the days of joy with them recur?
وَلاand no وَاللَهِby God ماnot اِجتَمَعَتhave come together ثَلاثٌthree things
فِراقُهُمseparation from them وَجَفنيand my eyelid وَالرُقادُand sleep
No, by God, these three have never come together:
No, by God, three things never reunite:
Separation from them, my eyelid, and sleep.
Parting from them, my eyes, and sleep.
فَإِنso if تَجمعbrings together شَتيتَthe scattered members of الشَّملِthe company مِنّاof us
وَفيand in الأَيّامِthe days جورٌinjustice وَاِقتِصادُand fairness
So if our scattered company is reunited,
If you reunite our severed clan again,
While the days hold both injustice and fairness,
Though days are unjust and thrifting,
تنجزّناwe shall exact مِنَfrom الأَحداثِthe vicissitudes عَهداًa pledge
أَكيداًfirm لاnot يُزاغُis evaded وَلاand not يكادُis undermined by guile
We shall exact from life's vicissitudes a pledge,
You would save us from events with a pact,
Firm, neither evaded nor undermined by guile.
Firm, that strays not nor can be undone.
وَكَيفَand how يَصِحُّcan hold true للأَيّامِfor the days عَهدٌa pledge
وَشيمَتُهاand their nature التَغيّرُchange وَالفَسادُand decay
But how can a pledge of the days hold true,
But how can days make a pact that holds
When their nature is change and decay?
When their nature is fickle and corrupt?
