رَأَيتُI saw الهِلالَthe crescent moon وَقَدwhile already حَلّقَتhad soared
رَأَيتُ الهِلالَ وَقَد حَلّقَت
نُجومُstars الثُرَيّاthe Pleiades لِكَيso as to تَسبِقَهoutpace it
نُجومُ الثُرَيّا لِكَي تَسبِقَه
I saw the crescent moon, while soaring aloft were
I saw the crescent moon while
the stars of the Pleiades, seeking to outpace it.
The Pleiades were racing to outpace it.
فَشَبَّهتُهُso I likened it وَهوَwhile it was فيin إِثرِهاtheir wake
فَشَبَّهتُهُ وَهوَ في إِثرِها
وَبَينَهُماand between the two الزَهرَةُVenus المُشرِقَهradiant
وَبَينَهُما الزَهرَةُ المُشرِقَه
So I likened it, as it followed in their wake,
I likened it, pursuing after them,
with radiant Venus between the two,
With the radiant planet set between,
كِرامٍlike an archer بِقَوسٍwith a bow رَأىsaw طائِراًa bird
كِرامٍ بِقَوسٍ رَأى طائِراً
فَحَلّقthen sent soaring فيin إَثرِهِits wake بُندقَهa pellet
فَحَلّق في إَثرِهِ بُندقَه
to an archer with a bow who saw a bird,
To an archer who saw a bird in flight
then sent a pellet soaring in its wake.
And let fly an arrow to give it chase.
