شَكَوتُI complained إِلَيهِto him ماwhat أُلاقيI endure فَقالَso he said ليto me
شَكَوتُ إِلَيهِ ما أُلاقي فَقالَ لي
رُوَيداًeasy now فَفيfor under حُكمِthe rule of الهَوىlove أَنتَyou مُؤتَليfalling short
رُوَيداً فَفي حُكمِ الهَوى أَنتَ مُؤتَلي
I complained to him of what I endure, and he said to me:
I complained to him of what I was going through, so he said to me:
Easy now—for under love’s law you fall short.
Be patient - for in matters of love, you are led blindly.
فَلَوfor if كانَwere حَقّاًtrue ماwhat اِدَّعيتَyou claimed مِنَof الجَوىheartache
فَلَو كانَ حَقّاً ما اِدَّعيتَ مِنَ الجَوى
لقلَّwould be little بِماgiven what تَلقىyou endure إِذاًthen أَنto تَموتَdie ليfor me
لقلَّ بِما تَلقى إِذاً أَن تَموتَ لي
For if the heartache you claimed were real,
If what you claimed of passion were true,
then dying for me would be a small thing, given what you endure.
You would scarcely claim, from what you go through, that you might die for me.
