سُمِّيتَyou were named سَيفاSayf (sword) وَفيand in عَينَيكَyour two eyes سَيفانِtwo swords
هَذاthis one لِقَتليَto kill me مَسلولٌunsheathed وَهَذانِand these two
You were named Sayf, and in your eyes are two swords.
You are named sword, yet in your eyes two swords I see
This one is drawn to kill me, and these two as well.
One is loose to slay me, the other two restrain
أَماdid ... not? كَفَتsuffice قَتلَةٌa killing بِالسَيفby the sword واحِدَةٌone
حَتّىthat أُتيحَwere provided مِنَfrom الأَجفانِthe eyelids ثِنتانِtwo (killings)
Was not one death by the sword enough,
Is not one sword enough for killing blows?
that two more should come from the eyelids?
That two should be allowed to cause me pain?
أَسَرتُهُI took him captive وَثَنانيand turned me غُنجُcoy charm مُقلَتِهِof his eye
أَسيرَهُhis captive فَكلاناso both of us آسرٌa captor عانِa captive
I took him captive, and the coy charm of his eye made me
I'm captive to you, while both your lashes hold me fast
his captive; so each of us is captor and captive.
My captor and captive both in sorrow's chain
ياO سَيفُSayf أَمسِكkeep بِمَعروفٍwith kindness أَسيرَa captive هَوىof love
لاnot يَبتَغيhe seeks مِنكَfrom you تَسريحاrelease بِاحسانwith kindness
O Sayf, kindly keep a captive of love
O sword that holds dear one captive in its grasp
who seeks no gracious release from you.
Release him gently, if you wish him free again
