شعُرتَyou composed verse فَجِئتَso you came بِعَينwith the very essence of المُحالabsurdity
شعُرتَ فَجِئتَ بِعَين المُحال
وَماand not زِلتَyou have ceased ذاpossessed of خَطلِfoolishness فيin المَقالْspeech
وَما زِلتَ ذا خَطلِ في المَقالْ
You composed verse and came up with sheer absurdity;
You felt poetry so you brought the impossible
And you have never ceased to be foolish in speech.
And you have not ceased your foolish talk
مَتىwhen عَزّwas honored فيin حِمصHims غَيرُanyone but العَزيزthe honorable
مَتى عَزّ في حِمص غَيرُ العَزيز
أَوor ذَلّwas abased غَيرُanyone but الذَميمthe vile الفَعالْdeeds
أَو ذَلّ غَيرُ الذَميم الفَعالْ
When in Hims has anyone but the honorable been honored,
When has one mighty in Homs been other than the mighty?
Or anyone but the vile in deeds been abased?
Or one disgraced other than the despised doer?
