أَتُرىdo you think? اللِقاءَthe meeting كَماas نُحِبُّwe wish يُوَفَّقُbe granted success
فَنَظَلُso we continue نُصبِحُtake our morning draught بِالسُرورِwith joy وَنَغبَقُand take our evening draught
Will our meeting, I wonder, go as we wish,
Will our meeting be as we wish, and bring delight
so we may keep drinking joy at dawn and dusk?
So we keep greeting mornings in bliss and bright?
حَتّامَhow long? تُمطِلُنيput me off اللَياليthe nights قُربَnearness to مَنone whom
قَلبيmy heart لَهُfor him مُتَشَوِّفٌeager to behold مُتَشَوِّقُyearning
How long will the nights delay my nearness to one
My longing heart for him will not relent or tire
whom my heart longs to behold and yearns for?
Though nights without him test me with their length dire
مَلِكٌa king أَغَرُّradiant أَغارُI am jealous أَنthat تَحظىshould be favored بِهِwith him
لِسوايَbelonging to others than me أَلحاظٌeyes وَلَحظيwhile my gaze مُملَقُimpoverished
A radiant king—I am jealous that the sight of him
A king, most noble, whose gaze I covet to share
is granted to others' eyes, while my own gaze is impoverished.
Mine eyes for his glance pine, his eyes for me care
I would sacrifice myself for أَباAbu (father of) الجَيشِal-Jaysh (the army) المُوَفَّقَal-Muwaffaq (granted success) إِنَّهُindeed he
لَلمَكرُماتِfor noble deeds مُيَسَّرُmade ready وَمُوَفَّقُand granted success
I would give my life for Abu al-Jaysh al-Muwaffaq; he is indeed
I'd sacrifice myself for the victorious commander
made ready for noble deeds and granted success in them.
He makes the generous deed smooth and meander
باهىvied in glory بِهِthrough him الزَمانَTime البهيُّthe radiant one كَأَنَّهُas though he were
نَشرٌfragrance عَلىupon وَجهِthe face of الزَمانِTime وَرَونَقُand luster
The radiant one boasted of him in rivalry with Time, as though he were
Time glories in him, glowing as it dresses
a fragrance and a luster upon the face of Time.
His face adorns time's face, enhances its fairness
مَلكٌa king إِذاwhenever فُهناwe speak بِطيبِof the sweetness of ثَنائِهِpraise of him
ظَلَّتcontinued بِهِover it أَفواهُناour mouths تَتَمَطَّقُsmacking their lips
A king—whenever we utter sweet praise of him,
A king whose sweet praise, when fortunes start to fade
our mouths keep smacking their lips over it.
Keeps our mouths murmuring homage decades made
حَسبُenough for الرِئاسَةِsovereignty أَنthat غَدَتit has become مزدَانَةًadorned
بِسَناهwith his radiance فَهوَfor he التاجُthe crown وَهيَand it المفرقُthe crown of the head
It is enough for sovereignty that it has become adorned
To rule's essence that with his years it's now graced
with his radiance—for he is the crown, and it the head beneath it.
He's the crown and rule the brow where he's placed
