شَرِبنا وَجَفنُ اللَيلِ يَغسِلُ كُحلَهُ
بِماءِwith the water الصَباحِof dawn وَالنَسيمُand the breeze رَقيقُgentle
بِماءِ الصَباحِ وَالنَسيمُ رَقيقُ
We drank, as the eyelid of night washed away its kohl
We drank while night's eyelid washed away its kohl
with the water of morning, while the breeze was gentle—
with the water of dawn, and the breeze was gentle—

an aged wine, like uncoined gold; as for its vapor,
an aged wine like gold; as for its vapor,
it was thick, while its body was delicate.
it was voluminous, and as for its body, it was delicate.
