    أَطالوا بِها في حشاكَ اِستِعارا

    They kindled a fire between your sides;

they prolonged its blazing within your breast.

Does glory not blush that they send you away

without sending a borrowed tent along with you?

If that is so, they have indeed cloaked glory—

far be it from them—in disgrace and shame on your account.

It is too little for your eyes that they should make

the blackness of their eyes a garment next to your skin.

Do you think they forgot when you crossed the wastelands,

longing for them, and plunged through the seas,

with a pledge to keep to the paths of loyalty,

when he strayed from them and acted unjustly?

    فَلَولا الضُلوعُ عَلَيهِ لَطارا

    And my heart yearns for Yusuf;

and but for the ribs around it, it would have flown.

    نَصَرتَ الهُدى وَأَبَيتَ الفِرارا

    And on the day of ʿArūba you drove back the foes;

you upheld right guidance and refused to flee.

He stood firm there, and indeed the hearts

between the ribs surely refuse to flee.

And but for you, O Yusuf, held in awe,

we would have seen the peninsula a home for unbelief.

We saw the swords at midmorning like stars,

and that stirred-up dust like night.

By God, how splendid you were amid its terror!

Indeed, your valor gained greater renown there.

You grow more daring whenever the spears

grow more entangled when battle is joined.

As though you take them for narcissus blossoms,

you pour blood over them as wine.

The spears show you slender figures bending,

and the broad blades reveal cheeks flushed red.

When you kindle the fire of your war,

we take the spearheads within it for sparks.

You shall find your deeds on the Day of Reckoning

scattering musk from you far and wide.

And the martyrs have praise for you

for your noble stand that day,

and they rejoice in good tidings for you:

that you shall not fear, nor suffer harm.

And you shall find bliss that makes you forget misery,

and reap freedom that makes you forget captivity.
