The hand of calamities drew its swords against me;
The hands of misfortunes brandished their swords against me,
And they severed the strongest cord of my endurance.
And tore strips from my delicate skin.

The hands of calamities struck with them, yet it was only
They struck with them the hands of misfortunes, but rather,
Hopes that struck the necks of the hopeful with them.
They struck with them the necks of those hopeful of wishes.
ياO آمَليyou who hope for العاداتthe customary favors مِنfrom نَفَحاتِناour bounty
يا آمَلي العادات مِن نَفَحاتِنا
كُفّواdesist فَإِنَّfor indeed الدَهرَTime كَفّrestrained أَكُفّناour hands
كُفّوا فَإِنَّ الدَهرَ كَفّ أَكُفّنا
O you who hope for the customary gifts of our bounty,
O my hopes from our breaths,
Desist, for Time has stayed our hands.
Refrain, for time has turned away, as we turned away.
