O soul, do not be distraught, and be patient.

O soul, do not despair and be patient

For in love there is no one who is fair.

For passion is not just

حَبيبٌ جَفاك وَقَلبٌ عَصاكَ

حَبيبٌ جَفاك وَقَلبٌ عَصاكَ

وَلاح لَحاك وَلا مُلطِفُ

وَلاح لَحاك وَلا مُلطِفُ

A beloved has spurned you, and a heart has disobeyed you.

A lover who ignored you and a heart that disobeyed you

And a reproacher has rebuked you, and there is no one to offer comfort.

There was no comfort for your pain and no consoler

شُجونٌ مَنعن الجُفونَ الكَرى

شُجونٌ مَنعن الجُفونَ الكَرى

وَعَوَّضنَها أَدمُعا تُنزَفُ

وَعَوَّضنَها أَدمُعا تُنزَفُ

Sorrows have denied the eyelids sleep,

Sorrows have deprived the heavy eyelids of sleep

And given them instead tears that are shed.

And compensated them with tears that flow
