أمعتَضِداًO Muʿtaḍid بِاللَهby God دَعوَةَa plea آمِلٍa hopeful man
رَجاكَhe hoped in you عَلىdespite بُعدِdistance فَأَصبَحand so became ذاpossessing قُربِnearness
O Muʿtaḍid bi-llāh, hear a hopeful man's plea,
I sought help from God with a hopeful supplication
who hoped in you despite the distance and so came near.
I prayed to you from afar and so became nearby
فَأمَّمَso he sought مأمولاًone hoped for وَأَمَّand he headed toward مُيَمَّماًone sought out
وَحامَتand hovered أَمانيهِhis hopes عَلover مَورِدa watering place عَذبِsweet
So he sought one in whom hope is placed, and turned toward one sought out;
He fulfilled what was hoped for and guided the lost
and his hopes hovered over a source of sweet water.
His wishes descended on a sweet flowing spring
مَوارِدُwatering places ماnever حَلّأنَthey drove away عنهنfrom them حائماone circling around
وَلاnor غادَرتهُthey left him غَيرother than مُستَعذِبfinding sweet الشِربِthe drink
Watering places that never drove away one circling about them,
The springs did not disappoint whenever he visited
nor left him without finding the draught sweet.
Nor did they offer him anything but the sweetest drink
وَهاand here أَناI ظَمآنٌthirsty لمنهلfor the watering place وردكمyour water
وَحَسبيَand enough for me مَوقوفٌdependent عَلىupon وردكمyour water حَسبيmy sufficiency
And here I am, thirsty for the source of your water,
And my destiny depends on your vines, that is enough
and it is enough for me that my sufficiency rests upon your water.
I have attained what I have wished for since I began hoping
أَفُزmay I attain بِالَّذيwhat أَمَّلتُI hoped for مُذsince كُنتُI was آمِلاًhopeful
وَتَحتَلّand you dwell مِنamong عَلياهُits heights فيin المَنزِلthe abode الرَحبِspacious
May I attain what I hoped for ever since I began to hope,
And took residence in the most spacious mansion
and may you dwell among its heights, in the spacious abode.
I journeyed tirelessly as if
فَجِئتُso I came أُغِذُّI hasten السَيرَthe journey حَتّىuntil كَأَنَّنيas though I
لإفراطbecause of the excess إِغذاذيof my hastening عَلىon أَظهُرِthe backs النُجبِthe highbred camels
So I came, hastening my journey, until it was as though I were
I was atop the highest peaks due to my persistence
from the excess of my haste, on the backs of highbred camels.
I found the highest ranked and most generous of men
فَألفَيتُso I found أَعلىmost exalted الناسِof people قَدراًin rank وَسُؤدُداًand nobility
وَعَدلاًand justice فدَتهُmay it ransom him النَفسُthe soul صدقاًtruly بِلاwithout كَذبِfalsehood
So I found the most exalted of men in rank and nobility,
Whose soul truthfully ransoms him, no lies
and justice—may my soul be his ransom, truly and without falsehood.
He eagerly rushes to aid those who seek him
يَهشُّhe beams إِلىtoward راجيهِone who hopes in him كالوامِقِlike a lover الصَبِّlovesick
وَيَهتَزُّand he quivers لِلمَعروفِfor doing good كالصارِمِlike a cutting sword العَضبِkeen-edged
He beams upon one who hopes in him, like a lovesick lover,
And trembles to do good like one shaking with rage
and quivers with zeal for doing good, like a keen-edged sword.
For turning to me and me to you I am thankful
وَإِنّيand indeed I لِماfor what تُوليyou bestow وَأَولَيتَand you have bestowed شاكِرٌgrateful
فَمَنfor whoever شَكَرَgives thanks for النعماءَblessings نالَattains رِضاthe pleasure الرَبِّof the Lord
And I am indeed grateful for what you bestow and have bestowed;
He who thanks blessings attains the satisfaction of the Lord
for whoever gives thanks for blessings wins the Lord's pleasure.
