O cloud, my eye surpasses you in its downpour.

I weep for my grief, yet you have not been burdened with sorrows.

And the fire of your lightning dies down after its flare,

But the fire of my heart remains a volcano forever.

Fire and water: the heart's core is the source of both.

When has the heart held fires and a flood?

    لَقَد تَلَوّن في الدهرِ أَلوانا

    Two opposites, brought together by the vicissitudes of time;

Indeed, it has taken on many colors through time.

I wept for Fath; then, when I sought solace for his loss,

Yazid died, adding more flames to my heart.

O two pieces of my liver, its rending denies me

Solace, in its anguish for you both, for as long as I live.

Indeed, with you both fell two stars that never cast

Their glances at Saturn except from above.

It eases my heart that the loss of you both

Will make my scales heavier on the Day of Gathering.

O Fath, that martyrdom has indeed opened for me

The door of hope that I may meet you joyfully.

And O Zayd, through you both hope has indeed grown

That God may add favor to favor.

When you joined your brother Fath, following him,

May God grant you both forgiveness and His good pleasure.

Peace from me, and from a bereaved mother,

Upon you both forever, together and singly.

I weep, and we weep, and we make others weep in sorrow,

    At the remembrance—women and children.
