إِنّيindeed I رأيتُكِI saw you فيin المَنامa dream ضَجيعَتيmy bedfellow
وَكَأَنَّand as though ساعِدَكyour forearm الوَثيرَsoft وِساديmy pillow
Indeed, I saw you in a dream, lying beside me,
I saw you in a dream, lying by my side,
And it was as though your soft forearm were my pillow,
Your plump arm seemed my pillow,
وَكأَنَّماand as though عانَقتِنيyou embraced me وَشكَوتِand you lamented ماwhat
أَشكوهُI lament it مِنof وَجديmy longing وَطولand the length of سُهاديmy sleeplessness
And as though you embraced me and lamented what
As if you were embracing me, confiding what
I lament: my longing and my long sleeplessness,
I confide from my love and my long wakefulness.
وَكأَنَّنيand as though I قَبّلتُI kissed ثَغرَكِyour mouth وَالطلىand the neck
وَالوَجنَتَينِand both cheeks وَنِلتُand I attained مِنكfrom you مُراديmy desire
And as though I kissed your mouth and neck,
And as if I kissed your lips and your cheeks
And both your cheeks, and gained from you what I desired.
And attained my desire from you.
وَهَواكِby my love for you لَولاwere it not for أنَّthat طَيفَكِyour phantom زائِرٌa visitor
فيat الغَبّalternate-day intervals ليto me ماnot ذُقتُI tasted طَعمَthe taste of رُقاديmy sleep
By my love for you, were your phantom not to visit
And I love you - if your image did not visit me
Me at intervals, I would never have known the taste of sleep.
In the darkness, I would not have tasted sleep's sweetness.
