أَباحَoffered لِطَيفيto my phantom طَيفُهاher phantom فيin الكَرىsleep الخَدّthe cheek
فَعَضَّso it bit بِهِon it تُفاحَةًan apple وَاِجتَنىand plucked وَرداroses
In sleep, her phantom yielded her cheek to my phantom.
Her charming apparition graced the cheeks in the settlements
So mine bit an apple there and plucked roses.
And so she bit an apple and plucked a rose
وَألمَتنيand she pained me (unclear reading) ثَغراًa mouth شَمَمتُI inhaled نَسيمهُits breath
فَخُيِّلَso it seemed ليto me أَنّيthat I شَمَمتُsmelled بِهِin it نَدّاfragrant incense
And she pained me with lips whose breath I inhaled [wording unclear].
And a mouth that I breathed in its breeze enthralled me
So it seemed to me that I had smelled fragrant incense in it.
I imagined I breathed in it pleasure from intimacy
وَلَوand if قَدَرَتshe could زارَتshe would visit عَلىin حالa state يَقظَةٍof wakefulness
وَلَكِنbut حِجابُthe veil البَينِof separation ماthe space بَينَناbetween us مُدّاwas stretched
And had she been able, she would have visited in waking life.
If she could, she would visit in a state of wakefulness
But the veil of separation was stretched between us.
But the veil of separation is extended between us
أَماhave ... not? وَجَدَتfound عَنّاaway from us الشؤونُlife's affairs مُعَرَّجاa turning aside
وَلاnor وَجَدَتfound مِنّاfrom us خُطوبُthe calamities النَوىof separation بُدّاan escape
Have life's affairs found no way to turn aside from us,
Neither did our affairs find crookedness
Nor separation's calamities any escape from us?
Nor did the worries of purpose find in us any deviation
سَقىmay ... water اللَهُGod صَوبَa downpour القَطرof rain أَمَّUmm (mother of) عُبَيدَةٍUbaydah

May God water Umm Ubaydah with pouring rain,
May Allah water the direction of the rain clouds, or Ubaydah's
As she has given my heart coolness to drink despite its heat.
As it has watered my heart in its heat with coldness

She is a gazelle in neck and a doe in eye,
She is the gazelle in beauty and the doe eyed
And a hillside garden in fragrance, and a bough in stature [wording incomplete].
And the meadow of pasture land lush and the branch that was picked
