الجُودُgenerosity أَحلىsweeter عَلىto قَلبيmy heart مِنَthan الظَفرِvictory
وَمِنand than مَنالattainment قَصيّfar-off السؤلِthe wish وَالوَطَرِand the desire
Generosity is sweeter to my heart than victory,
Generosity is sweeter to my heart than triumph,
And than attaining a far-off wish and desire,
And than attaining the desires of the beseecher and fortune-seeker.
وَمِنand than غِناءsinging أرَيوىUraywa فيduring الصبوحthe morning draught لَناfor us
ياO طلعةَface الشَمسthe sun فيat الآصالthe evenings وَالبُكَرِand the early mornings
And than Uraywa's singing for us over the morning draught,
And than the singing I enjoy in the mornings,
O face of the sun, at evening and at dawn!
O rising sun amidst roots and virgin sands.
وَمِنand from حَنَنتُI yearned إِلىfor ماwhat اِعتَدتُI was accustomed to مِنof كَرَمٍgenerosity
حَنينَyearning أَرضٍearth إِلىfor مُستأخرoverdue المَطَرِthe rain
And from my yearning for the generosity I was accustomed to,
And than my yearning for the generosity I was accustomed to,
Like the earth's yearning for overdue rain,
The yearning of a land for the coming of rain late.
وَقَدand indeed تناهتheld back يَديmy hand عَنfrom كأسهاher cup غَضَباًin anger
وَمَجَّتand spat out الأُذنُthe ear أَيضاًalso نَعمَةَsweetness الوَتَرِthe string
My hand has held back from her cup in anger,
And my hand has been too far from her cup in anger,
And my ear, too, has spat out the string's sweetness,
And the ear has also refused the blessing of the lute’s strings,
حَتّىuntil أُمَلِّكI give possession to هذيthis one ماwhat تَجودُit gives generously بِهِwith it
وَأَسمَعَand I hear الحَمدَpraise بِالأُخرىwith the other عَلىon الأثرِthe trail
Until I give this hand what it may bestow,
Until I make this one possess what she gives in generosity,
And hear praise with the other immediately afterward.
And hear gratitude with the other in succession.

مَحفوفَةًsurrounded فيin أَكُفّthe palms الشِربِthe drinking companions بِالبِدَرِby the purses of coins
So bring it as gifts of honor, with which I may please generosity,
So bring it to me as a gift with which I appease,
Ringed with purses of coins in the palms of the drinking companions.
Enveloped in palms full with brilliant moons.
