فَلَقيتُso I greeted زَورَتَهُits visit بِحَثّby urging on الأكؤُسِthe goblets
Fasting drew near, and the narcissus blossom came visiting.
Ramadan has come, the narcissus light visits
So I greeted its visit by urging the goblets on.
I met its beauty with cups of drink
فيin لَيلَةٍa night دارَتcircled عَليّabove me نُجومُهاits stars
حَتّىuntil سَكِرتُI became drunk بِكَفّat the hand of قوتQut (Sustenance) الأَنفُسِal-Anfus (of Souls)
On a night whose stars circled above me,
On a night whose stars revolved around me
Until I grew drunk at the hand of Qut al-Anfus.
Until I got drunk on the palm of sustenance

بِنَدىwith the dew of الثَناياthe front teeth وَالمُحَيّاand the face المُشمِسِsun-bright
A lovely maiden who possessed my heart, peerless
A cheek took hold of my heart uniquely
In the dew of her front teeth and her sun-bright face.
With the dew of dimples and sunny smile
وَجَعَلتُand I made نَقليmy wine-side relish ذكرَremembrance of موصلthe one who brought on زفرَتيmy sigh
فَجَمَعتُso I gathered أَشتاتَthe scattered parts of المُنىwishes فيin مَجلِسيmy gathering
And for my relish I chose remembrance of the one who made me sigh;
And I made my chanting the tale of my sigh
Thus I gathered scattered wishes together in my gathering.
So I collected the scattered wishes in my sitting
وَلَقَدand indeed ذَكرتُI recalled فُرادَunclear as written عَينيmy eye قُرّةًdelight
هولterror السبالthe mustaches وَخِزيand the disgrace of رَبّthe master of البُرنُسِthe hooded cloak
And indeed I recalled—[word unclear]—a delight to my eye:
And I remembered the delight of my eye, solace
The terror of the mustaches and the disgrace of the master of the hooded cloak.
From the terror of separation and shame of distance
