I sleep, but my heart is not asleep to glory.
And my heart is indeed enamored of lofty achievements.

فَإِنَّthen indeed اِجتِهاديmy striving فيin الطِلابِthe quest لَقائِمُsurely steadfast
And if an ailment holds me back from seeking them,
Then my striving in the quest remains steadfast.

It weighs upon my soul when I seek repose
In wine; then my noble instincts turn me back.

And I spend my night awake in thought, without eating,
While others, despite their ailments, are sated and asleep.

أَلاAh! أَينَwhere ياO عَبّادُAbbad تِلكَthose العَزائِمُfirm resolves
My striving calls out if it senses a slackening:
Ah, where, O Abbad, are those firm resolves?
فَتَهتَزُّthen stir آماليmy hopes وَتَقوىand grow strong عَزائِميmy resolves

Then my hopes stir, and my resolves grow strong,
And defeats remind me of their delights.
