عَلِّلsoothe فُؤادَكَyour heart قَدindeed أَبَلّhas recovered عَليلُan ailing person
وَاِغنَمand make the most of حَياتَكَyour life فَالبَقاءُfor life قَليلُbrief
Soothe your heart; an ailing man has recovered.
And make the most of your life, for life is brief.
لَوif أَنَّthat عُمرَكَyour lifespan أَلفُa thousand عامٍyear كامٍلٍcomplete
ماnot كانَwould be حَقاright أَنto يُقالَbe called طَويلُlong
If your lifespan were a thousand full years,
it would not be right to call it long.
أَكَذاis it thus?
وَالعُودُand the lute عُودٌa lute وَالشَمولُand the wine شُمولُwine
Does sorrow lead you thus toward death,
while the lute is a lute, and wine is wine?
لاdo not let يَستَبيكَtake you captive الهَمُّcare نَفسَكَyour soul عَنوَةًby force
وَالكأسُand the cup سَيفٌa sword فيin يَدَيكَyour hands صَقيلُpolished
Let not care take your soul captive by force,
while the cup is a polished sword in your hands.
بِالعَقلِthrough reason تَزدَحِمُcrowd together الهُمومُcares عَلىupon الحَشاthe heart
فالعَقلُso reason عِنديin my view أَنthat تَزولَshould depart عُقولُwits
Through reason, cares crowd upon the heart;
so reason, in my view, means losing one's wits.
