تَبدلتُ مِن عزِّ ظلِّ البُنودِ

بذُلِّ الحَديدِ وَثِقَل القُيود

I exchanged the glory of the banners’ shade

for the humiliation of iron and the weight of fetters.

وَكانَ حَديدي سناناً ذَليقاً

وَعضبا دَقيقاً صَقيل الحَديد

وَعضبا دَقيقاً صَقيل الحَديد

And my iron once was a keen spearhead,

and a sharp, slender sword of polished iron.

فَقَد صارَ ذاكَ وَذا أَدهَما

فَقَد صارَ ذاكَ وَذا أَدهَما

يَعُضُّ بِساقيَّ عَضَّ الأُسود

يَعُضُّ بِساقيَّ عَضَّ الأُسود

But now that and this have become a black iron shackle

that bites into my shins as lions bite.
