A stranger, a captive in the land of the two Maghribs.

A pulpit and a throne will weep for him.

And the gleaming, keen-edged swords and spears will lament him,

And copious tears will pour down among them.

In his Zahi and al-Zahir, generosity will weep for him,

And its seekers; kindness there is unknown.

When it is said, 'In Aghmat his generosity has died,'

Then no resurrection of generosity can be hoped for thereafter.

Gone is the time when kingship was at ease with him,

But today it has grown averse to him,

Through an unsound judgment of deluding Time.

When have the ages ever favored the righteous?

Their age has humbled the sons of Ma' al-Sama'—Water of Heaven,

And great is the humiliation of the sons of Ma' al-Sama'.

So heaven's water is nothing but tears for them,

Seas of it overflow upon the hearts.

Oh, if only I knew whether I might spend a night

With a garden and a pool before me and behind me,

In the olive-growing land that bequeaths glory,

Where doves sing or birds trill,

In its Zahir, whose summits soar—may life-giving rain drench it—

As the Pleiades gesture toward us, and we gesture back,

And al-Zahi and its Sa'd al-Su'ud gaze upon us,

Both jealous—and the lovesick lover is jealous.

Do you think it hard or easy to attain?

Yet all that God wills is easy.

May God decree death in Hims, and may they be overturned—

Graves of ours there, for the Resurrection.
